Abstract


The Volunteer Pioneer Program (VPP) is a project designed by Hi Neighbors aims to connect college students with the communities. This three months program includes two months of volunteer work and one month of personal project preparation and presentation.The program allows students to apply what they have learned in school to their daily work. At the same time, it will enhance the vitality of community networks and resource sharing. As Hi Neighbors, besides looking for volunteers, we hope students can learn practical skills through this program, and utilize their ideas to serve the community.



Who we are looking for


We are looking for students who are willing to learn from existing projects and extend their design thinking at the end of the program. To do this, we are looking for students from a wide range of areas of study, including but not limited to nonprofit studies, urban planning, marketing, computer science.



VPP Timeline

Fall Semester:


VPP-I

Sep. 18th Application open

Oct. 5th Application due

Oct. 15th Last day for an interview

Oct. 18th Offer announcements

Oct. 25th Program starts date

Nov. 25th Final proposal submission

Dec. 23rd Program design thinking event/ personal project info session

Jan. 23rd-24th Final presentation and program commencement

Volunteer positions


Community outreach volunteer


Role Description:

Hi Neighbors is a non-profit organization dedicated to community-based resources sharing. For our purpose of helping our neighbors, we are looking for volunteers who wish to strengthen their community network and grow with it. This position is an in-person role. As you work with local communities, you'll hear their stories, gather and share resources, and establish partnerships with local nonprofits and businesses. This volunteer position will provide you the first-hand experience of interview techniques, networking skills, and data collection and observation abilities. It is an ideal position for those who are considering a nonprofit career track, especially with a degree of community engagement.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Interview community members and update interview materials.

  • Communicate/ share information with local nonprofits and residents.

  • Conduct surveys and organize the survey results correspondingly.


Qualifications:

  • Desire of helping others regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, and political affiliation.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for team-based working as well as work autonomously.

  • Ability to perform community engagements.

  • Experience in using basic Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word software.


Preferred:

  • Experienced interview skills.

  • Bilingual or Multilingual are preferred.

  • Candidates who have experience in GIS for map making and/or Adobe suites for design.



Social media volunteer


Role Description:

Hi Neighbors is a non-organization dedicated to community-based resources sharing. For our purpose of helping our neighbors, we are looking for volunteers who wish to strengthen their community network and grow with it. In your work, you will need to build on your knowledge and creativity to connect with a potential audience of our community members, partners ,and donors. This volunteer position will provide you first-hand experience in social media communication and marketing. It is an ideal position for those who are considering a career track in social communication.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Communicate well with the team and prepare posts (content production, design, and innovation) on time.

  • Update weekly posts across platforms.

  • Promotion strategy development.


Qualifications:

  • Great writer with an eye for detail and a natural copyeditor.

  • Knowledgeable about Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for team-based working as well as work autonomously.

  • Desire of helping others regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, and political affiliation.

  • Experience in using Microsoft PowerPoint, Word.


Preferred:

  • Background in marketing, social media, or nonprofit. Interested in social media marketing and promotion.

  • Experience in using Adobe suites.

  • Bilingual or Multilingual are preferred.
